Chapter 11

Savanna

I sat down at the bar, leaning against the counter, and stared at the only picture I had of Ryan. He was just a baby, and simply adorable, with his dark hair and big eyes. It was one of the very few times I saw what my mom could have been—what she might have looked like had she been able to stay clean and sober. Healthy and vibrant. That was how she looked in this picture. My heart ached for her, but I had mourned the loss of what could have been a long time ago—long before she actually died.

“What are you looking at?” Avery pulled up a stool next to me, plopping into it and looking over my shoulder. The bar was finally closed, and the guys were cleaning up from a steady night of business. Avery had come by to hang out with Morgan before her business trip the next day and decided to stay and ride home with Blake. I guess she didn’t mind hanging out until four in the morning for her man. My work was done, and I was just waiting for Sean so we could head back to his place. Tony had left already, needing to be somewhere early the next day.

“It’s a picture of my mom and my brother, Ryan.” I held it out to her, chewing on my lip nervously when she took it from me. I still was at a dead end in finding him. I didn’t know how I thought I would be able to come to a big city and find him easily, but I had hoped.

“He’s darling!” Avery laughed at the cute toddler. “I assume he probably looks much different now though.” She smiled as she examined the picture closer.

“Yeah.” I giggled.

“Your mom ... looks healthy.” She smiled softly at me. Avery knew enough about my mom—not everything, but enough. I just nodded. Details of my life were not something I shared with everyone. I still hadn’t even told Sean much more than little details here and there.

“Hey, little bit.” Blake wrapped his arms around Avery’s shoulders, kissing her on top of the head. “What’s that?” he asked, pointing to my picture.

“Hey!” Avery squealed as Blake suddenly ripped the picture from Avery’s hands and backed away, studying it.

“Where did you get this?” he asked, staring at Avery. We both sat there, stunned at the quick change in Blake’s demeanor. “Avery, where did you get this?” he demanded once again, waving the picture in front of her. His face was pulled into a tight frown, and he looked pissed.

“It’s Savanna’s,” Avery finally managed to choke out. “What’s wrong, honey?”

“Why do you have this, Savanna?” Blake turned his questioning to me, and I suddenly felt sick. I wasn’t sure why Blake was so agitated, but it gave me a horrible feeling in my stomach. Something wasn’t right.

“It’s a picture of my mom and brother, Ryan,” I finally mumbled, standing up, not wanting to be vulnerable by staying seated.

“Bullshit, Savanna!” Blake hollered, his voice echoing around the room, causing both Avery and me to jump.
